The Secret to a Beautiful
Bathroom
When
I’ve had a hard day, I trudge through the door and head straight for my own
private sanctuary: my master bath. A long, hot shower can be one of the most
relaxing activities known to man. Of course, a hot tub in the bath works well,
too. Either one will have you relaxed and ready to take on the world again.
Would you like to create your own private oasis that's designed be more - much
more - than merely a place to brush your teeth? Here are a few tips to get you
started.
Pick a pleasing color palette
Sensational bathrooms have got to have a little something that makes them
memorable, and a pop of color could do just the trick. When considering the hues
for your bath, decide what type of overall feel you want to achieve in the
space. To make sure the bathroom harmonizes with adjoining rooms, pick a
complementary palette or repeat the same colors in the rooms.
The important thing, here, is to establish the
overall mood you want to convey. And nothing controls that aspect more than the
color scheme. Whether it's to be soft and serene or lively and vibrant, go for
colors you can live with for the long run and that suits your personality.
Add tempting textures and textiles
Since bathrooms contain so many cold, hard surfaces, it’s essential that you
soften them up a bit with interesting textures and yummy textiles. The trend,
these days, is for cabinets to be less like cabinets and more like furniture.
They bring the ultimate texture to the overall feel. With countertops, there are
so many options available nowadays, that settling on just the right surface will
take some time. There are many types of marble (both natural and synthetic),
Corian and it's many derivatives, and even concrete for a truly unique look.
Then
spoil yourself with a gorgeous area rug, like a classic Persian or funky shag.
Next, invest a set of high-quality towels. Instead of slinging your towels over
a boring old towel rod, hand them from nice hooks on the wall. Or fold them up
neatly and display them in a bookcase or on a shelf so the room looks like a
luxurious spa. If your bathroom has a spot for a shower curtain, don’t settle
until you find one that steals the show. I love simple shower curtains that
sport a large monogram. Or make a custom curtain out of a great fabric to
complement the color scheme.
Bring in fabulous furnishings
Furniture grade cabinetry is just one way of adding real personality to
your new bath. How about an interesting table or a bookshelf? Or bring in
some cute seating. Upholster an ottoman or slipper chair in outdoor fabric, and
use it to rest on while you dry off or dress.
Turn on to luxurious lighting
Forget those boring hardware-store light fixtures. Add character and warmth to
your bathroom with a gorgeous chandelier, wall sconces and an accent light or
two. I keep small lamps in all of our bathrooms to make them feel more welcoming
and homey. One can sit on the counter, on top of a bookshelf, or accessory
cabinet.
Finish with awesome accents and art
The icing on the cake is killer art and accessories. Cover the walls of your
bath with the same caliber of art you would showcase in the rest of your home. I
hung a huge oil painting of a purple and yellow iris on the wall that reflects
in the mirror. It makes a bold, showy statement and looks fantastic in its
setting. Finish out the space by tucking in treasures that make you smile.
Spruce up a shelf with a collection of tarnished silver cream pitchers, a candy
dish filled with scented soaps or a mix of antique boxes.
