A Room Addition To Create Your Perfect Living Environment
The process of deciding which is best for you can be daunting, and one of the services we provide is to help homeowners make an informed decision that's right for them. But once the decision is made to stay and invest in a room addition, it's time to get serious about the design. From an exterior standpoint, the most important aspect of all is to do this in a way that the new room looks as if it's always been a part of the house. We have a little joke in our company with regards to room additions that stand out like a sore thumb. We call them the growth on the side of the house. That's pretty brutal, but it's the way that many room additions - some of which are really expensive - look. There's just no need for that. Careful design, appropriate building materials, and roof lines that compliment the existing structure will lead to an addition that never looks like it was actually added on. It's a matter of paying attention to the details. Easy enough, but there are a lot of contractors (and even architects) who don't pay attention to those details. The end result "almost" right. But it still misses the mark. But after all, it's inside the room where you plan to live. The exterior is mostly what you look at as you walk, or drive, by. And it's in the interior where the real gains are to be made. Most folks proceed with a room addition to solve a specific problem. It may be to expand the kitchen, add an extra bedroom, or develop that family room that you've always lusted after. However, just addressing that singular need is usually not the best idea. Why? Because every room in your house relates to every other room in the house. What must be taken into consideration is how the addition will affect all the other spaces in the home. How does it change the traffic patterns? What room do you go through to reach the new addition? How are the sight lines affected? How do you manage the change in both natural and artificial light. Basically, an addition changes the whole house - for the better, we hope, of course. And it's once again, the details that make all the difference. Every decision that's made regarding ceiling heights, window placement, traffic patterns, and a million other details affect the outcome of the room addition. How do all these various elements provide a mix that not only makes the addition perform in a spectacular manner, but makes the whole house look and function better than ever? Careful design, materials that are truly functional and beautiful to look at, and craftsmen that care about getting it right in the execution are what ensures a great outcome. Details. . .it's always in the details! |
