“It has been a pleasure to work with you and your company.  My family loves the room and deck and all we get is OOOH’S and AAH’S when people first see the room.  More than one person has suggested we should be featured in Southern Living Magazine!”
Richard and Patty Felker

“Very happy – would not change anything.  I am thrilled with the job.”
Mary Lou Chambers

“A 10 – Couldn’t have been better.”
Earl Brill

“I just sit here in my new kitchen with a grin on my face.  It’s so beautiful.  It’s everything I could have wanted.  And we absolutely love Steve.  He was great to work with.”

Patios

A Patio To Die For

An outdoor patio functions exactly like a corresponding room in your home.  Will you have a dining area on it?  If so, the space devoted to it should be akin to your dining room or breakfast area.

Will you need an outdoor kitchen?  Even if this is a simple portable grill, it bears some resemblance to your indoor kitchen.  What items will need to be stored?  How much prep space do you require?  Should there be a wet area?  Yes, this can be much smaller than your kitchen, but the same issues face both spaces.

And, of course, there is the seating.  The design should take into account both immediate needs and long term flexibility.  Lastly, what kind of "fun" elements will be included?  There are additional options for ground-level patios that are different from raised decks - a fire pit for roasting hot dogs and marshmallows, for instance.  Also, the adjacent yard plays a much larger role in the scheme of things than does a deck.

Even the materials chosen will be evaluated on how well they tie the house, yard, and foliage all together into one integral statement.  Will the living space work better with brick than patterned concrete?  Is flagstone or tile a better fit for your lifestyle?

The most well-designed patio creates a backyard retreat that nurtures the soul and provides a domain of refuge from the rest of the world.  Viewed from the house, it should draw the observer into the space, should call to them for a moment, or a day, of relaxation.

The real kicker to all of this, is that the primary guarantor of success is not necessarily money.  Truly outstanding designs can be accomplished with use of shear creativity, even when substantial funds are not available.  People who think that a plan will be outstanding if enough money is spent, are fooling themselves.  A creative design will beat the pants off an expensive ho-hum design every time.
