Screened Porch Hangouts
What
is the reason for a screened porch, anyway? Is it merely so one can sit outdoors
and not get eaten alive by mosquitoes? I think not! A carefully designed
screen porch is a place of sanctuary; a retreat that can serve many functions -
from outdoor living room to home office and everything in between. Like a sunroom, porches are what I call "transitional areas." That is, they are not fully outside, but they certainly aren't inside, either. They're a hybrid and that's where there charm lies. Because they are wholly under cover and the screening provides some sense of separation from the outdoors, the usual rules for outdoor living don't quite apply. I like to design my sunrooms so they include elements that deliberately blur the line between inside living and out. That includes the addition of fireplaces, which not only extends the season, but draws people with a charm all of its own. Since porches can be wonderful places to sleep when the weather is just right, I've included hammocks in the design. A table for dining is a must! And outfitted with a desk, it becomes the office away from the office and is just about the most desirable working environment there is. Think about any room in the house and a screen porch can serve as an alternative to that space. And when the weather is right, it will do it better than your main living area. An alternative to the bath? Well obviously not entirely. But we've installed plenty of hot tubs on screen porches and they draw lots of traffic as friends and family show up with towels in hand and swimming suits in a handbag. Swings and screen porches seem to go hand in hand. But many swings aren't all that comfortable for a long, leisurely book read. That's because most swings are rugged to stand up to outdoor use. However, there's a manufacturer of porch swings that bases their design on the hammocks that they sell. You don't so much sit in them, as you melt into them. They're absolutely luscious to sink down into. Talk about hanging out? This is living in the lap of luxury. Good lighting, soft music in the air, and ultra comfortable furnishings are just a few of the details that can transform your screened porch into a virtual oasis of tranquility and relaxation. It can be the ultimate place to hang out. And it's only a few, non-gas guzzling feet away. |
